How an Asshole Friend Treats You…
Why I had to leave ‘Friend of Medium’
I think most of us only joined Friend of Medium (FoM) because we thought our fellow writers would get more income when we read their stuff.
There are a ton of talented writers that I follow and whose work I read and enjoy regularly. I always felt they deserve the extra income. It also seemed like a much more seamless way to reward them than to use a tipping website.
But now?
Even before considering whether my own earnings are actually covering the cost of FoM, I have to ask — if I’m paying fifteen bucks a month, how is that all those great writers are only getting pennies for their work? Where is the money going?
So, as Bob Dylan said, ‘Goodbye’s too good a word, so I’ll just say fare thee well’ … to the FoM programme.
Don’t think twice, Medium — it’s all right. I’ll be here somewhere. Probably.
Thanks to you for reading, to Jay C Wells for suggesting we add ‘asshole’ to all our titles as some kind of postmodern protest, and to Sieran Lane for inspiring the idea in the first place (with this story!).
This was also my 💯 Story Inspiration Challenge piece number 18 of 100. Interested in joining the challenge? Check this story by Aurora Moon McKnight in TFWD to learn more. Here are all my responses so far, and below is the inspiration:
