My Most Curious Alternate World Writing Prompts
And an update on my October Challenge!
I like to share writing prompts every Monday, usually as themed lists. Last week, I shared the following ‘random’ collection of 22 sparks:
Now, here are ten new writing prompts for your enjoyment, in three themed sets. They are all about alternative worlds/realities, and I think that each set suggests the set-up for a story. Perhaps the beginning of a NaNoWriMo novel?
Let’s go…!
Stone age
- It’s the stone age. Describe how the first musical instrument is invented.
- It’s still the stone age. Write a scene where the first cave-wall artist begins their practice.
- Describe an encounter of your stone-age people with another tribe/people, an unfamiliar creature, or some other threat.
Portal
- A portal opens up in your house. Do you go through?
- What’s on the other side?
- Describe your first adventure through the portal.
Last human
- You’re the last human on earth. What are the first tools that you’d pick up from the abandoned hardware stores?
- Following on from the prompt above, would you do to keep yourself safe?
- Following on, describe your first night.
- Following on, write a letter to the people that you wish you had spent more time with.
October challenge update
As a reminder, the challenge was to craft a story including at least two of the prompts from the story below, and to tie it into a broader theme that features Hallowe’en or Samhain in some way (or a very similar celebration, e.g. in a fantasy world):
